Those who remember the heyday of the US space program are sure to remember the "drink of the astronauts", TANG, and probably drank it for breakfast during the 60's. (Tang had a limited engagement at our home as there were far more cost effective beverages available. But one should at least know what such a popular drink tasted like!) Somewhere along the line, except for those who continued to be involved in low budget institutional food programs, Tang seemed to fall off the radar screen. Sure, there was some in the grocery, but did you ever see anyone actually put in the cart and take it to the checkout?
Well, fear not for Kraft, the makers of Tang. It appears that this powdered "orange" flavored soft drink has continued to be a big seller world wide. In fact, in the Middle East, it is quite popular to the point that work camps offer Tang right next to orange juice and Tang seems to win out on the taste test based on informal lunchroom observations. In the Doha, Qatar airport duty free shop, there are two of the biggest Tang displays you are likely to see outside of a Tang regional distribution center. Going home? What gift would your friends back home most appreciate? Why, a gigantic container of Tang should fit the bill nicely, thank you!
Kraft has entered the Indian market too. Although powdered soft drinks have fared poorly at stores in India, perhaps Kraft is counting on all the workers returning home from Middle East assignments to bring with them a powerful thirst for Tang! I know I've been making up for the Tang deficiencies of my own youth at the Tang fountains of Qatar.
