There was a RAID at the office this week. The Dubai "INS" agents came in and made us all show our "green cards". It wasn't a good day for some who where caught working before their Jebal Ali Free Zone (JAFZ) work permits were processed. E., who works in the office had told me how important this card was and of course he didn't have his with him and booked out the back door "to go to lunch" before he was checked.
Women on their husbands’ cards working with a Letter of No Objection (NOC - no objection certificate) had their card copied. I presume so the husband could reconfirm he didn't object. Here, I think the work permits are mainly about revenue generation. It was funny-to me-to be caught up in a search for "wetbacks" in Dubai - but I'm sure it wasn’t funny at all for those who were worried about being deported.
