Deira Gold and Spice Souks

Deira is probably one of the most affordable places to live in Dubai. It’s teaming with human activity—an impressive concentration of people, shops and restaurants. Popular destinations are the Gold and Spice Souks (markets).

The gold jewelry is incredible - much of it very large and ornate but a wide variety exists in addition to watches and other more standard jewelry. You could probably get a custom piece of gold jewelry made here for a very reasonable price if you take the time to negotiate.

The spice souk especially is a step back in time. Yes, Deira is very different from the Dubai of news and magazines which focus on Dubai as an ultra modern tourist destination.

On the docks of Dubai Creek in Deira there are wooden ships carrying goods of all kinds piled from top to bottom. Many of the boats appear to be of Indian and Pakistani registry with everything from appliances to coconut oil, wood from Chile to cars from Korea. Not a square inch of space is left unfilled. Rumor has it many are loaded in Dubai from larger ships and are bound for Iran and other countries not having favored trade status.

On the docks you can also take a water taxi ride on a Dhow from Bur Dubai. Many people park there (50 fils or .5 AED @ 3.65 AED/$)due to the heavy traffic to Deira. Deira is a place to be visited more than once. Next time, I’ll consider coming by cab or at least by boat from Bur Dubai to avoid the parking hassles.
