Ed. note: News of the high rise fire in Dubai this week made me think of the construction sites around the apartment. There were cranes in every direction, more than 2 dozen just across the marina basin.
Watching the construction crews at work on the Yacht Club next door was more interesting than middle eastern t.v. on most days. (Note the Febles-o-Meter registering the temperature equilibrium. It was 25 inside and 25 outside +/- a degree or two every day.)
The workers would put down pieces of plywood to sit on and eat lunch in that little patch of dirt. Afterwards they would stretch out for a nap. Men in blue jump-suits and yellow hard hats were hammering, sweeping, hauling, and climbing all day. Men in kahki pants and white hats were allowed entrance in the construction trailers and walked around with walkie-talkies. One day they all got together for "staff meeting."

It's hazardous work with tragic consequences for some workers on a near-by site this week.

For the westerners, just another construction delay...
