Had my first "home cooked meal" (spaghetti and garlic bread) in my new apartment tonight. I was up late last night unpacking the shipment from the states. The construction site next door woke me up early so got up about 7ish and did stuff until I could go to Ikea. Wanted to unpack the desktop computer and decided I needed a desk to put it on so went to get one. Another piece that I had ordered (chest of drawers) had come in so I got it and a desk! The desk is cheapo but pretty cool with an integrated erasable white board. The dresser box weighed 156 lbs (ouch!). Even though I'm not planning to start a family, it seemed a bit much for a middle aged fat man but I knew I could load it in the Prado and at the apt I could take it up piecemeal. When I got home I was fortunate to be met by 2 entrepreneurial lads from the sub-continent wearing what appeared to be Emeer (the company that owns/manages the building) uniforms who approached me and asked if I would like their assistance. YES, I said - especially that box (the 156 lb one). In a display played out every day in every way here, I had to cajole the one to help the other carry the 156 lb package which clearly outweighed him by at least 20 lbs. I gave them 25 Dhs to split (about 7 dollars) for carrying the 4 boxes up and putting them in my apartment. I could hear them excitedly gushing and discussing their good fortune through my closed door until the elevator door shut.
I spent the evening putting the 2 items together, setting up the computer and putting up blinds in the study. Had a small sand storm this morning. It was o.k. at my place but away from the beach, you couldn't see more than about 200 feet. Very disappointing as Fridays are usually the one fairly clear day in Dubai since most construction is shut down.
